The lunar new year is the most important and celebratory holiday of the year for Chinese, both in China and in ethnic communities around the world.
This was the only time in China's agricultural culture when farmers could take a break from their work in the fields. Family members would travel from far and wide to be with loved ones in time to see out the old year and bring in the new with spectacular celebration.
The Chinese people have been building on historical New Year celebrations for thousands of years, according to a calendar going back to the third millennium BCE.
When it is celebrated?
Unlike the Gregorian calendar, which begins on January 1st, the Lunar New Year does not always begin on the same day. The calendar is based on the moon's 12 phases, which explains why. Each phase lasts around 29 days, with a total of 354 days in the calendar.
On February 1st, a couple of days ago, the Chinese New Year was celebrated. The new year in 2023 begins on January 22nd.
Lunar New Year, like December 31 and January 1 each year, allows individuals to put the past behind them and look forward to a new beginning. It's also a time when families get together for big feasts. Though festivities often begin the weekend before and go for weeks, only the first seven days, from January 31 to February 6, are designated as public holidays.
The Lantern Festival, which occurs on the first full moon of the year, marks the end of the New Year season in China. It falls on the 15th day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, which falls on February 15 this year.
The Year of the Tiger
Each year is associated with a different animal in the Chinese calendar: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.
The year 2022 has been selected as the Year of the Tiger in the Solar calendar.
"The tiger represents bravery, wisdom, and strength in Chinese culture. However, the tiger isn't referenced in the Bible, and the lion, a Western astrological sign, isn't represented in the Chinese zodiac "In a statement, Qin Gang, China's ambassador to the United States, said
The tiger, not the lion, is the king of the jungle in Asian cultures, and those born during a Tiger Year are regarded to be natural leaders who are fearless and thrill-seeking, with a strong desire for attention.
Queen Elizabeth II, Fidel Castro, Marilyn Monroe, Shawn Mendes, Lady Gaga, and Tom Cruise are among the famous personalities born in the Tiger Years.
