After the recent Golden Globes awards, Ramy Youssef, the Egyptian-American comedian, has brought a lot of people’s attention, especially in Egypt, his home place, where nobody has heard of him before.

With an opening joke thanking “his God” and saying “Allahu Akbar” following comedian Ricky Gervais’ closing line, Ramy opened his speech after winning the first prize of the night as best actor in a comedy or musical television series for his role in the Hulu series “Ramy”. Here is all what you need to know about Ramy and his show “Ramy”.

Ramy is a stand-up comedian and writer, his biggest start on TV was in May 2017 when he did 5 minutes of stand-up on the popular Late night show “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert”. In 2019, he got his first stand-up special “Feelings” which is available on “HBO” network.

“Ramy” is considered as the first Egyptian-American TV show in history. The show is about an Egyptian family who is living in New Jersey. It is one of the few shows that do not talk “about” Muslims but “show” Muslims and their personal stories and experiences in life. The beauty of the show is that it is not a ‘one-man show’; there are whole episodes that tell stories about other characters on the show. The show goes through many issues like sex and religion, 9-11 and Muslims, cousins’ marriage, and many other issues.

Starring Amr Waked, the famous Egyptian actor, as Ramy’s father, Mo Amer, the Palestinian comedian, who you may know from his Netflix comedy special “The Vagabond” or from his appearance on Bassem Youssef’s show “AlBernameg” back in 2013 when he did 25 minutes of stand-up and an interview, May Calamawy, the Bahraini actress, as Ramy’s sister, Hiam Abbass, The Palestinian-Israeli actress, as Ramy’s mother, and Rosaline ElBay, the Egyptian Actress, who you may know from the last Ramadan series “Qabeel”, as Ramy’s cousin who appeared in that last two episodes of the first season with number of other Egyptian actors and actresses like Shadi Alfons and Khaled Mansour.

Season 2 is coming out in May 2020 on Hulu, if you haven’t watched the first season yet, you can watch it on Hulu or Wavo, it is a great show and worth watching!
